Best Places Online to Learn about Typeface Design

Finding tools online about typeface design can be easy. I have compiled a list of the best blogs, websites, and resources for typography and typeface design. One issue I had when doing research for this article was that a lot of typography blogs and websites have been abandoned. So I have made an effort to provide the most up to date resources that have new content that has been posted in the last year.

I know this is a bit self-serving but you’re already reading here, right? This is a great resource if you want to start designing a typeface and feel overwhelmed. It is a great place to start learning about how to design a typeface.

Type Directors Club

Established in 1946, the TDC today curates a calendar of typographic intrigues designed to:

  • build community through public events and platforms

  • support the growth of students and early career professionals

  • recognize excellence in type design across the world.

I love Typography

I love typography is a great resource for historical topics in typography. They provide in-depth articles on specific topics, typically historical, that deal with typography.

Typographic.org

Founded in 2002, Typographica is a review of typefaces and type books, with occasional commentary on fonts and typographic design.

Typewolf

Typeworship

The Type Worship blog was created by Jamie Clarke in 2011. It started as a personal research aid, a place to collect inspirational type and lettering together with notes and commentary. The blog grew rapidly and gained support from Tumblr. Type Worship is now one of the largest type and lettering blogs, with a following of over 230,000 type enthusiasts.

Type for you is a blog on typography that reflects on a wide array of typography that is created.

Typostrate

Typostrate was found in 2011. The idea came up to make a simple blog about typography and to look at what happens with it. After having posted the first 200 image posts in 2011 I was asked to get on board with the tumblr typography division. That was the moment the blog started to become bigger. Lately with the beginning of 2013 the posts got more informational for having more quality than quantity. At the end of 2013 we decided to make a real and awesome site out of this blog, And the story goes on…

Fonts in Use

Fonts In Use is a public archive of typography indexed by typeface, format, industry, and period. We document and examine graphic design with the goal of improving typographic literacy and appreciation. Designers use our site for project research, type selection and pairing, and discovering new ways to choose and use fonts.
